Prostate Cancer and Its awareness

The prostate is an exocrine gland of the male reproduction system and which exists directly under the bladder, in the front of rectum. An exocrine gland is one whose secretions end up outside the body like prostate gland and sweat glands. Prostate cancer is a type of disease which only affects the men. Cancer begins to grow in the prostate – a gland in the male reproductive system.

Prostate cancer is mostly a very slow progressing disease. Several researches have indicated that perhaps about 80% of all the men in their eighties had prostate cancer when they died but nobody knew about it.

Prostate cancer usually does not have any symptoms. Sometimes, however, prostate cancer does cause symptoms similar to those of the diseases like benign prostatic hyperplasia which include frequent urination, nocturia (increase of urination at night), difficulty in starting or stopping and maintaining a constant stream of urine, hematuria and dysuria. Prostate cancer is related with urinary dysfunction as the prostate gland surrounds the prostatic urethra. Therefore changes within the gland, directly affect the urinary function. This is because the vas deferens deposits seminal fluid into the prostatic urethra and secretions from the prostate gland itself are included in semen content. Prostate cancer can also cause problems in sexual function and performance, such as painful ejaculation or difficulty in achieving erection.
